Young Writer’s Conference Session Titles Available for Elementary and Secondary
Conference and Community Audiences:
“Backwards or Forwards: Creating a Time Travel Adventure Story” Will you travel to the past or into the future? Past- bring a picture of or object from the historical time you will visit; Future- come prepared with an extra creative imagination! We will create a time travel adventure with the support and feedback of a writers’ group.
“Diary Drawing” When given a date either from the past or in the future, be ready to calculate your age and write a fictitious personal diary entry.
“My Major Impact Person: Writing About a Hero or Heroine” Who do you really look up to? Spend some time planning and writing a nonfiction piece about that very special person. Even bring their photo to share. Participate in a Writers’ Group for feedback and support.
“Personality Grab Bag” Come to class ready to grab a personality or character quality out of a bag! Once you have made your selection we will write stories in which you as the main character ( or another character, real or imagined) feature the quality you drew. Your story can be true or a fantasy, serious or funny. No matter what, your story will GRAB your readers.
“Solitude Trail” After viewing a DVD of a hike along a trail, write a story of your adventure along a remote trail. Consider adding in suspense and surprises around every turn.
“The Inventors’ Convention” Come prepared with a design of a new invention in mind or on paper. Be prepared to write about an imaginary new product or gadget. Plan to push your product with descriptive writing and persuasive wording.
“Using Cartoon Starters to Create Story Characters” When presented with a variety of cartoon characters developed by the author, create a mystery or adventure story. Come with ideas for additional characters to include. (e.g. “Irate Kate”, “Inspector Hector”, “Jealous Ellis”, “Bossie Flossie”)
“Who Will I Become?” Do you think about your future and who you want to become? Bring ideas of your dreams and plans and be ready to write about yourself at age 16, 21, 40, 65, 88 and 102! Consider your family life, your career and life interests and goals as part of this. What fun things would you like to do in the future? How will your life benefit others?
