Teacher, Teacher!

by Mary Z. McGrath, Ph.D.

Go beyond the “apple” this holiday season for the teachers in your children's’ lives.

Following are ideas offered by Mary McGrath, Ph.D., of Burnsville, Minn., a speaker, author , and consultant who works with schools.

Tickets and certificates.

Enhance their time away from school with tickets to a movie, sports event, concert or play. On the more practical side, teachers always can use certificates to office supply and books stores.

Food.

Create an adult lunch box with healthy and high-energy foods, such as dried fruit, trail mix, and pretzels. Mix up an original batch of grail mix and have your child decorate the container to put it in.

Professional items.

Teachers can always use motivational posters, stickers, and rubber stamps. Help them stay organized with colorful storage boxes.

Magazine subscriptions.

Support professional development with an academic journal or educational idea magazine sent to their home. Or reinforce their interest in golf, gardening, fitness, or fashion.

Memberships.

Enroll them as members of a professional organization relative to their specialization or subject interest. Purchase them an annual state park sticker.

Media.

Whether for classroom or personal interest, cassettes, software, DDS, and CDs can bring relaxation or classroom enhancement to any educator.

Personal Comfort Items.

Lotion and oils are welcomed by hands that get dry from consistent exposure to chalk and other use. (These same hands also welcome stamps, postcards, and phone cards. ) Remember their feet, too, with slippers and a self-care message.
