A MESSAGE FROM MARY MCGRATH

Bugs Under a Rock

Have you ever picked up a rock and seen several bugs scatter in every direction? What does that have to do with summer? Consider this. During the winter and spring we are busy with work and the projects that consume us during those times. Then, when school is out, life changes dramatically.

With the arrival of summer the bugs under the rock become clearer. All of the things we have put off until summer show up in our lives. The pile in our home office, the closet that needs cleaning, annual medical appointments, building a new deck- the list is endless!

Just when we thought we could have time to enjoy the outdoors, relax and sleep longer, these bugs appear in our lives demanding to be addressed.

How then does one maintain balance in the summer? This is the season when we want to be outdoors more, yet do we want to be outside weeding instead of biking? Do we want to be driving to the bank to learn about retirement planning instead of driving in the country?

Is there a bug spray to get rid of all we have put off? I wish there was but perhaps we need to readjust our priorities for the summer season. Following are five suggestions for staying in balance when faced with summer bugs.

  1. List the summer projects that you believe can be realistically completed.

  2. List the recreational activities you would like to do. After all, hiking, boating and biking deserve their due as well.

  3. Think of ways to up your self-care with the extra time available. Schedule a massage, meet with a trainer, and escape to a lake to fish and reflect.

  4. Offer to listen to a friend going through a tough time. Ask if your friend would like to enjoy lemonade at a café on a lake. Be there for this important person in your life.

  5. Take time for your inner spirit. Journal, read an inspirational book, meditate or just sit and enjoy the view from your deck. Look at the bright flowers, listen to the bird songs in your yard. Just breathe in the fresh air and feel the warmth of the sunshine.

Summer is a short season. It offers time to renew and regroup. Yes, we have to address the bugs under the rock. We also can do this in a paced and relaxed manner to replenish the body and spirit for the busy days awaiting us in the fall.
