A MESSAGE FROM MARY MCGRATH

Summer so far has been a combination of storms and sunshine here in Minnesota. The Bloomington Schools have ended their official year so that opens up more time for seeing family and friends, keeping things rolling on the home front and just plain R&R. The hammock is up so that is a start!

So far I have planted pumpkins, green beans and sunflowers, weeded our small bird sanctuary and begun to plan a perennial flower bed. Another hope I have is to plant grapes and "Italianize" the place a little bit.

With my flexible work schedule, Jim and I sampled off season travel by going to Scandinavia and Russia for ten days. We enjoyed seeing spring reawaken another northern part of the world.

Now to settle into summer in the Midwest. May yours include enjoyment of people, places and all of your pursuits!

Summer "R&R+"

When you think of it, there are several "R" words suitable for summer R and R.
For starters, Rest is a word almost foreign during the busy fall, winter and spring. The standard eight hours of sleep are easier to get during the slower summer season. Regrouping while sitting back in a lawn chair, escaping to a lake cabin, or going away to a retreat house for a night or two, helps regain bearings lost during the busy days of past seasons. Quiet time offers the opportunity to reevaluate personal and professional goals. While fine tuning our lives we can reflect on recent achievements, determine what goals no longer fit and also come to the realization of new aspirations.

Renewal personally and professionally could include a return to hobbies left unattended for months. This may be time to pull out the guitar, add more lures to your tackle box or update birding checklists. Reorganization of the office file cabinet, book case or garage helps to put new order into our daily setting. While rearranging the house, one room at a time, we can decide what to recycle and rediscover "buried treasure to reuse or display.

During picnic season we can refuel the body with summer salads and fruit, so abundant in summer. Once summer gets rolling it is easy to fill the calendar with outdoor exercise such as softball, biking, and canoeing. Saving space for medical appointments such as the annual physical, an eye exam or dental check up ensures the spectrum of self-care is in place.

There are lots of "R’s" to choose from in order to rejuvenate and enjoy the refreshment of the summer days ahead. "R" you ready?
