A MESSAGE FROM MARY MCGRATH
JUST GIVE ME A MINUTE!
The phone rings! The doorbell rings!A staff member pops in needing to discuss a lesson. The voice over the intercom requests that you come to the lounge for a short meeting.
You are ready to blow up and hear in your mind the title of this article. Guess what- no one is going to give you a minute. You have to find that minute and claim it as your own.
How to do that? Following are six suggestions for clearing a minute or more for yourself.
- Take a deep breath, pause and if necessary take a few more breaths. That helps to clear your head to determine the next step.
- Decide if you really need to answer the door or phone or whatever beckons you.
- If you engage with the person needing your attention, respond politely but also clearly and to the point. Smile and explain that you need to do....x ...y ....or z.
- If you are in over your head, stop to consider when you can work your way though the list in your planner, the pile on your desk or the demands of others.
- Create a space where you can decompress whether it is a park where you can walk near work or home, a room in the house that you can use for solitude or an inner space you can go to by closing your eyes.
- Be grateful that you are in demand. When people value your assistance, your input and your presence it is clear you have gifts to share. Do so with the clear understanding that you can only give if you know how to pace your activity and to take care of yourself!
Move on the journey connected to others and to your own heart. Just take a minute from time to time to stay in touch with your dreams and needs too.
