A MESSAGE FROM MARY MCGRATH
Staying Wound Up as You Wind Down - or Vice Versa
During this transition into spring, teachers and parents experience a paradox of sorts. Teachers feel the push to keep performing until the very last minute of the official school year. In contrast, parents (and grandparents involved in caring for their grandchildren) might benefit from staying wound down in order to gather their last bit of rest before young people leave the structure of school.
Whether you teach or parent of both, this time of year presents its unique challenges. The trick for everyone impacted by the cycles and seasons of the education world is to hold on to some semblance of balance in the process.
That being the case, how about stepping back and reflecting before the next big transition? What might that involve for busy people such as yourselves?
- Check Your Breathing - Stop right now! Are you breathing with shallow, short and anxious breaths or are you breathing steadily and deeply? The deeper and steadier, the better the oxygen flow to the brain. The more oxygen to the brain the better you notice, plan and make judgments.
- Be Mindful of Where You are and What You are Doing -This prevents misplacing keys or even having a car accident. An over occupied mind is a trap for all of us. Yet if our “to do “ list is in tact, we need only focus on the present. Then we can transition to our next item of business.
- Take Time Out - Break from the driven and fast pace of your schedule. Journal, read, call a friend or “ say one” for all tackling this tough transition time!
Happy Spring into Summer Transition!
