A MESSAGE FROM MARY MCGRATH

Taking Time Off in the Spring-Before You Break!

The time between winter break and spring break seems endless to some education staff. With the confinement of continuous work schedules, longer nights and more wind, snow and ice, it is certainly understandable that anyone would “white-knuckle it” until spring break.

The thought that break will come offers the incentive to “hang in there” until the your chosen change of pace for that week arrives.

How to spend the week? For some it is a time of “catch up” at home. Bills, yard work and cleaning await. Though that does not sound in any way exotic or glamourous, getting on top of things at home can be satisfying. To have a stretch of time to actually complete a few tasks without obligations to be at work at a certain time can be quite a relief in itself.

Another aspect of spring break is to reconnect with the world again. What’s happening in the news? What is the buzz on talk radio? Does my favorite sitcom still exist?

Exercise and sleep sound pretty good after an extended time of long work hours. Rip Van Winkle would understand how it feels to walk in the neighborhood, reopen the locker at the health club and suit up for a swim, or dust off the hiking stick in the garage and hit a nearby trail.

One important aspect of spring break is to take time to enjoy family and friends. Drive a few hours and see a high school buddy. Pick up a cousin and go have a sandwich at the old neighborhood cafe. Invite a friend for coffee and catch up on conversation.

For some, spring break is a time for a really big separation from routine - travel to a warm spot. The thought of sitting in a beach chair reading  a novel, staring at the aquamarine sea, or shopping in a straw market keeps some going to the very moment that spring break officially begins.

Whatever you do on break - enjoy ! If your break is over, look back and savor the good times. Summer is coming soon! You will not break!
