PUBLISHED BY REFLECTIONS RESOURCES, LTD. Spring, 2002 A MESSAGE FROM MARY MCGRATH
The seasons are moving fast. Winter is letting go gradually of its hold on us here in Minnesota. A few scrappy storms have made their last ditch effort to keep winter around. Now, spring is almost here! May it bring you moments of quiet and time to notice bright flowers, joyous bird songs and gentle showers.
Take a Deep Breath!
Spring brings wonderful things such as pleasant weather and longer days with more sunlight. The commute to work is brighter and the drive home an opportunity to enjoy blue skies. For those who work in a school spring also heralds the end of year pressures. Classroom teachers notice students becoming a little more restless. Special educators experience the pile up of assessments. Principals juggle all the demands from the many groups seeking their support and attention. Paraprofessionals encounter behavioral incidents outdoors on the playground. Secretaries handle urgent requests from every side.
Perhaps this is the season for going into overdrive to complete a project or placing the shoulders in a tight and tense posture while writing a report or IEP. The voice may rise a few decibels while confronting a challenging student. During a staff or committee meeting, drooping eyelids might indicate the challenge of sustaining attention.
Interrupting any of these patterns by taking a deep breath, breaks into the stressful driven mode that goes with working in a school. It won’t make the work disappear - but it takes the edge off, adds energy and helps refocus on the task at hand.
