Layering Self-Care for Busy Minnesota Speakers

by Mary Z. McGrath, Ph.D.

We Minnesotans pride ourselves on being of hardy stock.  We believe ourselves capable of enduring the elements when the temperature goes below zero.  For us, layering clothing, from long johns to down coats, is standard fare during long winters.  Despite the climate, our activities continue.

Since we are so good at layering clothes, I'd like to suggest that we also consider layering our self-care as a butter to the elements of stress in our busy lives.

You may ask, "Layering self-care? What's that all about?"  Let me give an illustration.  Today while at my health club, actively involved in a aqua aerobics class, I had the opportunity for social contact, quiet reflection and I even did some exercise!  Three layers of self-care in one activity.

One could also "layer" while walking.  Not only is it exercise, but it is also a great way to find solitude and have spiritual time.  Layered walking can easily be done here in Minnesota and "on the road" near any hotel.

While out of town, and eating in a hotel restaurant the opportunity is there to select the most healthy diet option.  If you are eating alone there is time for solitude and reading motivational books for personal as well as professional benefit.

Support is an essential element of self-care.  How fortunate we are to have an organization that can be categorized as professional and work-related that is also, by nature, supportive and offers the opportunity for building friendships.

Living our lives in layers involves less time and little preparation.  It's more about how we view our lives.  Whether we are socializing, reflecting, finding solitude, having spiritual time, exercising, eating, reading, meditating, or getting support from our friends, as MSAers we have many reasons to express gratitude.  Self-care opportunities are everywhere.  See you "layer"!

Mary offers presentations and seminars to educators, parents and working professionals on the topics of self-care, support and personal growth.  She is the author of Teachers Today: A Guide to Surviving Creatively.
