A MESSAGE FROM MARY MCGRATH
The First Day of Fall / 9-23-03
How does today differ from the summer of yesterday? Technically we have made the transition into a new season. The temperature remains pleasant here, in the sixties and seventies. The sun is bright, the moon narrowing to a mere crescent and the sky clouds a bit as I glance out a coffee shop window.
So where is the hint of a seasonal change? Only infants and preschoolers accompany their parents to the store where I sit sipping coffee. Sweats replace shorts as my preferred outdoor exercise outfit. Apples rest on the ground along the path of my morning bike ride. Perhaps the last of our garden zucchini has found a home on a friend’s dinner table. Suddenly squash and sweet potatoes take on more appetite appeal. I eagerly await the first frost for its annual conquest of allergy season.
What does this have to do with wellness and the family’s potential? Perhaps this season signals a transition from erratic busy summer days. It invites us to settle into new comfort with conscious conversation. Maybe now we can pack up summer’s scattered lifestyle and institute a little more discipline in the diet and exercise realm. Does the earlier approach of darkness invite a few extra hours of sleep?
Whatever we choose to do to take better care of ourselves and our family life, a new season ushers in the opportunity to begin living at a level surpassing that of last season. Let’s live this fall with resolve to move forward to good health and fulfilling family time.
